Selection

We are highly selective when choosing a dog for this line of work, in fact only about one out of 100 dogs that we evaluate qualifies for training.

Training

Training consists of about three to four months of intense training six days a week. We train in both controlled environments and in real world locations such as hotels, trains, and movie theaters. We train the dogs to walk on ladders and planks in order to inspect ceilings and high locations. When a dog finds a live bug or egg it will sit and visually alert the owner. Dogs are directed where to inspect with a pointer as opposed to by hand to make it easier for the handler to identify where he wants the dog to search.

Your new bed bug dog will be personally trained by some of the best scent detection trainers in the world. With over 60 combined years of experience, we have the experience to bring out your dogs inner desire to work and perform.

Certification

Our dogs must be able to perform countless double blind tests in order to become certified by BedBugDogz before being released to its new owner. This means that a single live bug, or 5 eggs are planted in various environments, (house, hotel, airplane, school lockers, cars, etc) in a location that is not known by either the handler or the dog. The dog must alert 95 out of 100 tests. Not until the dog can meet this high standard will it be considered a finished dog. Keep in mind that in the real world, nearly every infected location has many bugs, and if a dog can pass these single bug tests, it can be considered nearly 100% accurate in the real world environment.
